He focuses on sustainability science and sustainable agriculture development, public policy and planning; integrated natural resources management. Prof. Helmi collaborates a lot with domestic institutions and international institutions such as UNESCO, Indonesia Fund-in-Trust, Management of Social Science Transformation Programme (MOST), He is a Chairman of the Board of Professors of Andalas University for the period 2021-2026 and Coordinator of Steering Committee of SAFE-Network
